-- You'll need to know two things about private delivery services.

1. Be aware that the IRS recognizes only certain types of private delivery services for the purpose of determining whether a tax return was mailed on time for avoiding late penalties:

  • DHL Same Day Service.
  • FedEx Priority Overnight, FedEx Standard

Overnight, FedEx 2Day, FedEx International Priority, and FedEx International First.

  • UPS Next Day Air, UPS Next Day Air Saver, UPS 2nd Day Air, UPS 2nd Day Air A.M. UPS Worldwide Express Plus, and UPS Worldwide Express.

2. You'll need to know to which service center you are sending your tax return for processing. You can find the service center by using Where to File directory of mailing addresses. Note to which city your tax return is being mailed. Then, find the street address for that city's service center using the private delivery service addresses .

It's best to send tax-related documents using certified mail with return receipt requested. That way, you'll receive confirmation that the IRS actually received your documents or payment. And this can come in very hand if the tax return or payment gets lost, as you'll have proof of delivery. The United States Postal Service Web site has additional tips for making sure your tax returns are mailed properly .
