Is the GRE required for admission? If so, is there a minimum score requirement?
Admission requirements for each program can be found at http://gradschool.fiu.edu/admission-requirements.shtml. The doctoral programs do require that you take the GRE, although there is no longer a published minimum score. Most master’s programs do not require you to take the GRE.

How do I request that credits be transferred into my current degree program?
In consultation with the advisor, a student may request to transfer credits in to their current degree program. To transfer in credits taken as a non-degree-seeking student at FIU, an inclusion form must be submitted. Theform can be found at http://onestop.fiu.edu/_assets/docs/registrar/Grad_Inclusion_form.pdf. The transfer of any other credits must be requested via memo by the student’s advisor to German Cruz, Office of the Registrar. Official transcripts from the institution from which the credits are being transferred must be on file atFIU.
My Panther Degree Audit (PDA) is showing as “not satisfied,” but I have completed all of my coursework. Will this impact my graduation?
Students that exceed the time limit for graduation must submit an electronic petition, including: (1) separate memos of justification from the student and advisor, (2) course re-validation plan, and (3) timeline for completion to degree. What do I do if I cannot begin the program in the semester for which I initially applied or was accepted? Students that would like to request that their application/acceptance be deferred should contact the department with their Panther ID and the semester for which they would like to be considered. Note that applications can only be deferred for up to three semesters.

How many credits do I need to register for to be considered full-time?
At the graduate level, nine credits in the Fall and Spring and six in the Summer are considered full-time enrollment.
For how many credits am I required to register?
To be considered an active graduate student, you must be enrolled in at least one credit hour. However, if you are a doctoral student that has advanced to candidacy, you must be enrolled in at least three dissertation credits each semester (Fall, Spring and Summer). Note that some financial aid awards, including graduate assistantships and fellowships, have minimum enrollment requirements that are greater than those required of active students.
What happens if I do not enroll for classes?
Students will only be dismissed for non-enrollment if there is a lapse in enrollment for three consecutive terms, or if the student does not enroll in the semester for which they were admitted. Doctoral students that have advanced to candidacy will be dismissed for non-enrollment if they are not enrolled in a minimum of three dissertation credits at any given time.
What should I do if I need to be excused from registration for three or more consecutive semesters?
A student that finds it necessary to be excused from registration in a graduate degree program for three consecutive terms, or one term in the case of students subject to continuous enrollment, must formally request a leave of absence from the graduate program. Leave time must be requested and approved via electronic petition (initiated by the advisor) prior to the beginning of the anticipated leave.
I am interested in changing/removing/adding to my current graduate degree program/sub-plan. What do I need to do?

If you did not graduate in the semester you completed your coursework, you can contact the Office of Graduate Studies at 305-348-2723 to request to register for a graduation prep course. This is a zero-credit course that is equivalent to one credit in terms of tuition.
Candidacy, Dissertation and Thesis
Are there any requirements for the composition of my Program of Study (POS) committee?
Are there any requirements for the composition of my master’s thesis committee?
Yes. The thesis committee must be comprised of at least three members of the Graduate Faculty. The committee will consist of at least two faculty members from the department from which the student is receiving the degree. Can I have a committee member that is outside of FIU?

showing as “not satisfied,” but I have completed all of my coursework. Will this impact my graduation? Yes, your PDA must be satisfied to be able to graduate. If your PDA needs to be updated, you must contact your academic advisor for assistance.
Can I work additional hours outside of my 20 hour per week graduate assistantship? The Graduate School does not permit employment outside of the 20 hour per week assistantship without an approved petition. Requests for additional or outside employment are very rarely approved.
What is the Summer enrollment requirement for Graduate Assistants? Graduate Assistants are required to be enrolled full-time for the duration of the contract. Six credit hours is considered full-time in the Summer. The six credits can be taken in any combination of Summer A, B or C, but the student must be registered for all six credits before the start of Summer C.
I applied for a Graduate Assistantship and did not hear whether or not I was awarded a position. GA applications are accepted on a rolling basis. When a position becomes available, all of the applications on file are reviewed. Those being considered for an interview are contacted. All other applications remain on file for all of the semesters indicated on the application form. Due to the high volume of applications received and the limited number of available positions, assistantship awards are highly competitive.
I am a Graduate Assistant and earned a C, D or F in a course. Will my contract be cancelled? Graduate Assistantship contracts will be cancelled if the cumulative GPA falls below a 3.0.
