Final Score: Mets 3, Dodgers 2—Uribe shows Mets how to use the clutch
The Mets ' new players have endeared themselves quickly. It was Juan Uribe who was the hero today, cracking a 400-foot single off Kanley Jansen to bring home the winning run in the 10th. The Mets endured another meltdown by the bullpen late in the game, broke Zack Greinke's scoreless inning streak, and were able to split a series against a strong team despite spotting them the first two games.
Curtis Granderson led off the decisive tenth by stretching a single into a double. Ruben Tejada failed at a bunt attempt, and Daniel Murphy was intentionally walked to bring up Uribe. Down 0-2, the 15-year vet rocketed a fastball off the top of the wall in left-center which missed a home run by inches but got the job done.
Earlier in the game, Jacob deGrom won the duel of aces, serving up a clean score sheet over seven and two-thirds innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out eight. deGrom finished the day with the second lowest ERA in baseball (2.05), behind only Greinke, but would also frustratingly finish with a no decision.
The Mets scratched across the run that snapped Greinke's streak in the third. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off by taking a Greinke fastball off his back, and advanced to third when Joc Pederson whiffed on backhanding a
Kevin Plawecki single. Jacob deGrom then bounced one to first, and a hard-charging Nieuwenhuis beat the throw home by Adrian Gonzalez.
Michael Conforto collected his third career RBI in the sixth when, with the bases loaded, he too was hit in the shoulder by Greinke. For a while, that looked like all New York would need today.
Down 2-0 in the ninth, the Dodgers rallied to tie against Jeurys Familia. who was not sharp and gave up two runs in an outing for the first time this year. Justin Turner drove in the first run with a gap double, while on the game-tying hit by Yasmani Grandal. Uribe was unable to stop a hot shot down the third-base line.
Conforto led off the ninth with a walk, but the Mets could do nothing with him, as Niewenhuis popped up a bunt for the first out, and Plawecki and Wilmer Flores fanned to send the game to extras.
Jennry Mejia had to walk a tight rope in the tenth as Jimmy Rollins made it to third with one out, but Meijia struck out Pederson and got Howie Kendrick to fly out to set up Uribe's heroics.
With the Nationals ' loss to the Pirates. the Mets are just two games out of first place, and will continue their homestand against San Diego on Tuesday.
