About New York Yankees
There are many sports teams in New York, but one could argue that none are more storied than the New York Yankees. And heading up to the Bronx for a game is a New York rite of passage, whether you spend the game tallying box scores or just kicking back to enjoy the roar of the crowd.
The Yankees play at the new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009 and replaced the 1923 stadium that stood next door. There are many food options, including Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs (a
New York institution of another kind) and sandwiches from Parm, known for their roasted turkey. Get to the game early (gates open two hours before the scheduled start time) to explore the stadium. The Great Hall features banners picturing Yankee greats, while Monument Park includes plaques honoring top players such as Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio.
The team's uniforms have featured pinstripes since 1912. That was back when the team was known as the Highlanders. They became the Yankees in 1913.
While the new stadium was being built, a construction worker buried a jersey from the rival Red Sox in the concrete in an attempt to curse the stadium. After many anonymous tips were called in, the exact location was determined and jackhammers were used to remove it.Source: www.newyork.com
