How to Balance a Ceiling Fan Blade

how do you balance a ceiling fan

When a ceiling fan blade is wobbly and out of balance, it can make strange and annoying sounds and drastically decrease its efficiency. In order to provide maximum air circulation, your ceiling fan needs to turn straight and true. If you have a wobbly ceiling fan blade, here's a how-to guide on how to help you get it back in balance.

Step 1 - Turn Off the Power

If you're installing a new ceiling fan and need to balance it, or if you are trying to correct an imbalance in an old ceiling fan, you'll first need to make sure that you turn off the power switch for your ceiling fan. Once you do this, test it a few times by turning it on and off.

Before attempting to balance the ceiling fan, visually inspect all of the blades and make sure that none of them are warped or damaged. If one of the blades is damaged, it may need to be replaced. If this is the case, you'll likely have to call the fan's manufacturer because most home improvement stores do not

carry replacements. Also, check to make sure that none of the screws in the blades are loose. If screws are loose, tightening them may solve your problem.

Before you begin balancing the blades, find out which blade is out of balance. You can do this by holding a yardstick flush against the ceiling and measuring the distance from the ceiling to each blade. The distances should be equal, but since the ceiling fan is wobbly, one or more of them is not level. Determine which blade or blades are not level and put a small piece of tape on the blade to mark it temporarily.

Once you have placed the weight or washers, test the fan by turning it on and see if the wobbling has improved. If it has, you are finished. However, if the fan is still wobbly, you'll need to place balancing weights from the kit or more washers on the other blades until the ceiling fan is balanced. Continue to move the balancing weights or washers around until you find the correct weight and the best way to distribute it.
