Betadine Douche For BV: Is It Safe?

A home cure for bacterial vaginosis that is sometimes suggested online is a Betadine douche for BV. Betadine is a brand name for a povidone-iodine solution. The key ingredient is elemental iodine. When Betadine is sold over the counter as a liquid in a bottle, it is usually sold as a 10% solution. You can also find generic bottles of povidone-iodine if you want to save a little money.

To prepare a Betadine douche for BV, or a povidone-iodine douche for BV, it is usually recommended to add 1/2 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of the Betadine 10% solution to a cup of distilled water. You can also buy over the counter “medicated douches” that contain a really low concentration of povidone-iodine.

IMPORTANT Message About Betadine Douching #1:

Betadine causes severe skin reactions in some people. This includes blistering, rashes, and open weeping sores. This is especially true if it is applied to an area of the skin that is already irritated, such as the vaginal walls that are irritated with BV. For this reason, if you have never used Betadine before and you really want to try it, you may want to start with a very dilute concentration of Betadine in water. If you have no irritation, you could then gradually increase the concentration. However,

you could get the same effect of killing the BV with a hydrogen peroxide douche with virtually no risk for severe skin reaction as bad reactions to hydrogen peroxide, properly diluted to 1% to 1.5%, are exceedingly rare.

IMPORTANT Message About Betadine Douching #2:

Betadine is a broad spectrum antiseptic. This means it will kill virtually every living microorganism it comes in contact with. In a sense, this is like taking a broad spectrum antibiotic that kills all the bacteria it comes in contact with, good and bad. The problem with this that is such a good bactericide, it will easily kill off your natural flora. This will rid you from the BV infection over the short-term but it will also make it easier for you to have a much stronger secondary infection. For this reason, a Betadine douche for BV is not recommended in most cases, although some women swear by them. A hydrogen peroxide douche will kill fewer of your beneficial bacteria and give your natural flora a fighting chance to re-establish themselves before a secondary BV infection can form.

In this poster’s opinion, a hydrogen peroxide douche for BV would be much safer than using a Betadine douche for BV. Also, since the natural flora of a vagina actually produce peroxide, they are quite able to survive the hydrogen peroxide douche.
