The former Destiny's Child singer says the clothes are "affordable couture", which "fuse celebrity power and design artistry into a brand of global importance". Beyonce's mother Tina, who has been designing Beyonce's clothes for years, is the creator of the line, with her daughter as the inspiration. The label takes its name from Beyonce's grandmother, Agnes Dereon, a seamstress who designed and created clothing for private clients. The whole theme of the line is turning it into something special because that's what my grandmother did with all kinds of fabrics,
said Beyonce. "She just turned everything into masterpieces, and that's what my mother does."
The fashion line was launched in October 2005 by Beyonce and Tina Knowles. The line was inspired by the success of Tina Knowles' fashion creations worn by the R&B group Destiny's Child during public appearances and in music videos. Prior to the launching of her line, many of Tina's creations were seen on the red carpet, worn by Beyonce and the other members of the group.
The collection is named after Beyonce's grandmother and Tina's mother, Agnes Dereon, who was a Creole seamstress. They describe the clothing line as Couture. Kick. Soul. Beyonce's Grandmother as being the soul, Beyonce is the kick, and Tina Knowles is the couture. In every ad there is a picture of her Grandmother. The clothing line was first announced to be released on the Destiny's Child 2005 world tour (Destiny Fulfilled. And Lovin' It) and worn through out the whole tour. Although Knowles had briefly talked about how she had an idea of releasing a clothing line for women, it wasn't publicly announced until 2 years after the idea came out to the public. It premiered for the first time on The Oprah Winfrey Show in November 2005. The models for the runway show included Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The line targets women aged 18-35 who are fun, classy and want to be on top of fashion.
