How to get athletic trainer certification

Certified athletic trainersare allied health care providers who specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses that occur to athletes and the physically active.

To become a BOC-certified athletic trainer, you must earn a degree from a college or university with an accredited athletic training program, then take and pass the exam administered by the Board of Certification (BOC).

Don’t have a bachelor’s degree?

For a list of schools with accredited entry-level programs from which you could get a bachelor’s degree ,

  1. Go to: .
  2. Click Search Programs.
  3. Under Program Type, select Professional from the dropdown menu.
  4. Under Degree Type, select Bachelor from the dropdown menu.
  5. If you are interested in a particular state, please select it from the dropdown. If you don't specify a state, all programs will appear.
  6. Click the Search icon.
  7. You can also search for a specific university by typing the name in the Search box and clicking on the Search icon.

Already have your bachelor’s degree?

If you already have a bachelor’s degree in something other than athletic training. you have two options:

  1. You can get a second bachelor’s degree from one of more than 360 schools mentioned above that have an accredited program at the bachelor’s level, or
  2. You can get a master’s degree in athletic training from a university with an accredited entry-level master’s

    program. Use the same list above, but choose those that specify Master in the Degree Type dropdown menu.

Member of CATA?

If you are a Certified Athletic Therapist in Canada and member of the CATA, you may automatically qualify to take the BOC exam based upon the Mutual Recognition Agreement. Please visit the BOC website for more information.

For questions about admission to a specific accredited program, contact the program director at the individual college or university.

State practice acts: Most states regulate the profession of athletic training. Go to (requires members-only login) to check the regulatory act in states where you may wish to practice. Verifying the requirements in advance is important because in some cases you cannot start your first day on the job until you have met the stipulated qualifications.

Maintaining Your Credential

The BOC Recertification Requirements outline the requirements to maintain your BOC certification. The requirements include information about completing the continuing education (CE) requirements, meeting the emergency cardiac care (ECC) requirements, submitting the BOC certification fee and adhering to the BOC Standards of Professional Practice.
