Security certificates are mandatory for many business networks. Certificates can give employees access to secure websites and virtual private networks, and they can be used for sending and receiving encrypted email messages. While the technology behind certificates and encryption may be complex, loading them onto an iPhone is relatively straightforward. Certificates can be sent as email attachments or Web links. Once you download the certificate, it should load automatically. If you are using the certificate to send or receive secure email, you also need to adjust your email settings.

Loading a Certificate to an iPhone

Step 1

Contact the network administrator in charge of issuing security certificates for your network, and ask how you can get the certificate. Security certificates can be downloaded from a website or sent as an email attachment to an iPhone.

Step 2

Launch Safari to access a certificate that is on a Web server. Type the URL or IP address provided by the administrator into the address field at the top of the

screen. If the address is the certificate itself, the certificate downloads automatically to the iPhone. If the certificate is linked to a website, tap the certificate's link on the screen to download it.

Step 3

Open the email sent from the administrator if you received the certificate as an email attachment. The certificate is downloaded to the iPhone.

Step 4

Tap the "Install" or "Install Now" button if prompted. Enter your iPhone's lock screen passcode if prompted. The iPhone may warn you that the certificate's authenticity cannot be verified even if it comes from an authenticated source.

Using a Certificate to Send or Receive Secure Messages

Step 1

Tap the "Settings" icon on the iPhone home screen. Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars," and then select your account name. Tap "Account" followed by "Advanced."

Tap the "Account" back button in the upper left corner of the screen, and then tap "Done." The certificate allows you to send and receive encrypted messages to other accounts that also have a certificate.
