How to locate death certificate
Vital Records Indexing Project
Welcome to the Maryland State Archives Death Records Index. Available indexes include the twenty-three counties other than Baltimore City for 1898-1944, and for Baltimore City from 1875 to 1972.
The statewide index (counties other than Baltimore City) consists of images derived from original index cards. The images are grouped alphabetically by surname. After selecting a letter, you must scroll through the pages of images; each page contains 5 images. Please note that the images cannot be searched directly by using the find or locate function. The critical information required to locate a death certificate is the name of the deceased, the county where the death occurred, and the date of death.
Baltimore City records are accessed through two separate systems. For Baltimore City a death certificate number is required to locate the record. For the periods 1875 to 1880
and 1943 to 1949 a searchable database will find all instances of the name requested and provide the certificate number. For all other periods you will search in digital images of the original paper indices. The order of the names in the indices varies across time.
Clicking on the image of a card will take you through the steps to order a copy of the death certificate. The fee is $25.00. All copies are certified. Please note, you do not need to send a separate check for each certificate. You may send one check for all the certificates that you are ordering. Currently, the Archives can accept orders for copies only through regular mail.
The images are as legible as they would be on film, and suffer from the defects of the original filming. Any questions or concerns should be addressed to email@example.com.Source: vitalrec.msa.maryland.gov
