Wednesday, September 15th, 2010
Basic cardiac Life Support or BCLS as it is popularly known is a kind of medical support given to people suffering from cardiac problems till the proper treatment can be given. The BCLS is not the treatment or cure for cardiac problems. These are simple steps taken to help ease the patient’s suffering till professional help arrives.
To provide BCLS support to anyone, you need to be certified in this field. There are many hospitals and universities that offer the BCLS certification programs where you can enroll and get this training. The course can last anywhere between 4 hours to 2 day long training.
While there are not pre qualifications required for this training, some of the most common people that take this course are Physician Assistant, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Charge Nurse, Clinical Nurse Manager, Licensed Vocational Nurse and Director of Nursing. The organizations that employee these people include hospitals, companies – private and public, federal, state and local governments, colleges, universities, non profit organizations and schools.
The course generally trains the people on the common CPR skills for adults as well as infants. People who just collapsed or have a foreign body in the airway too can be treated with BCLS training. There are different scenarios depending on whether the person is conscious or unconscious, the age, physical structure and other aspects. The certification will train people on all these aspects.
Getting these basic certifications generally varies from country to country. While the basic steps are kind of the same universally, there may be some minor changes based on the procedures approved by the local government. So if you want to practice BCLS professionally in any country, you need to get a certification from that country.
To get the certification you need to attend theory courses in the classroom. Besides this there are some practical training sessions too. Depending on the certification scope and the course syllabus you could be taught saving people from choking, people who collapse suddenly, people who are shocked and other such commonly encountered situations. Some courses will also offer Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) operation options too. To pass the exam you need to get through written exam and a practical test. Some institutes offer the theory in CDs for study from home while others blend practical and theory so have class room sessions.
In short, BCLS is an important and useful certification to get if you are in the medical profession. Being an emergency training you can make some serious impact on people’s lives with this knowledge and skill.

CPR First Aid Certification
Thursday, August 12th, 2010
The CPR or cardio pulmonary resuscitation and first aid training is one of the most basic life support training that one can receive. It has great application in office, in emergencies and any walk of our daily life. Accidents can happen anywhere and a person who knows and understands CPR First Aid can seriously help the patient in dire times and save the life.
Various organizations offer CPR First Aid training and certifications. There are multiple levels in this certification. The most basic among this is the Standard CPR and First Aid certification. Various organizations like Red Cross provide training for these certifications. Some stick to just the basic CPR techniques, while others may enhance the course with injury prevention information and operating AED.
The standard course typically covers the regional EMS system, how it works, what it does, etc. the check – call – care procedure in handling emergencies, first aid for airway emergencies, breathing and circulation techniques, head and spine injuries, wound care, bone, muscle and joint care, among others. The course also covers first aid in case of cardiac arrest and respiratory arrests.
The more advanced certification is the Emergency CPR First Aid Certification. This course is generally administered by Red Cross and is more aligned with the state level and provincial rules and requirements for handling emergencies. This course also covers more or less the same set of
topics like the standard certification.
In good training institutions and facilities you will get top quality training material – written or soft copies in CD, practical demonstration and plenty of hands on experience with human form mannequins. Look for these services before registering for this training with any institution.
Many institutions also offer this course online. With this option, you can study online and come for practical demonstrations. Most certification exams are multiple choice questions written exam followed by a skills test. In this test you will demonstrate the first aid and CPR techniques in front of a supervisor.
Different organizations provide certificates of varying validity so you need to choose your certifying organization carefully too. In the US the Red Cross CPR certificate is valid for about a year while the American Heart Foundation certificate is valid for two years. The first aid certificate is valid for three years.
You can always recertify to retain the validity of your certificate. Fortunately, you do not have to sit through the boring theory classes every year for recertification. You can directly book an exam and take the written and skills test again based on the material shared with you the first time and get recertified.

First Aid courses are important for everybody. It gives you the basic understanding of what you must do in an emergency situation and how to react rationally. Your presence of mind could be the difference between life and death for a person. Given the importance of first aid training, many organizations and institutions have started offering these courses.
The traditional approach to first aid training was to attend classroom courses. For the people who are fine with this, it is not a problem. In fact classroom training may be better as some people understand things best if taught by a live trainer.
However, there are many people who really cannot learn well in a classroom atmosphere. The whole room filled with unknown people and staring eyes can make learning tough for them. There are a few other people who cannot dedicate fixed time to match the training schedule. For such people, if they could learn the first aid information at their own pace, at their leisure, they would benefit the most. First Aid online courses are designed for such people.
For most online courses you just need to register by paying the fees and get access to the training material. You can review the material as many times as you want and once you are confident take the online test. You can get the first aid online certificate sitting at your home. While different institutions have different validity period, most of them give it for 2 years.
Since there are no live trainers, many people think the quality of the training with online courses would be poor. However, the course material with almost all online training institutions is designed to meet the specifications and rules of the local province as well as federal standards. So you do not get substandard quality. The biggest advantage of online courses is that regardless of the region, you will get the same quality of training. With classroom training, a lot of it really depends on the quality of the trainer.
The only drawback with purely online courses is that you will not get any practical hands on demonstration for any of the things you learn in the course. However, majority of the topics covered in this course are more about common sense and presence of mind, than specialized techniques which you need to practice to perfect. So you really do not miss hands on experience a lot. Besides, if the online courses were really not effective most states would not have recognized them, which is not the case.
So whether you are a medical practitioner or just someone sitting at home who wants to ready for emergencies, first aid online courses are a great option available to you.
