Examine how businesses compete in a nation in which a majority of the population lives at the base of the pyramid. This group has low individual purchasing power but huge group purchasing power. To address this, businesses must make significant adaptations and have a greater understanding of such markets. Spend two days in the townships surrounding Cape Town to meet South Africans and gain first-hand insight into the BoP and entrepreneurship issues. Examine how firms prosper despite resource limitations taken for granted in mature economies such as the US and Europe. Meet with South Africans to understand how they do business and compete. Meet with microlenders. Visit high technology firms and an organization that works with AIDs victims and their families.

10: Welcome dinner.

August 17: Closing Dinner.

August 18: Depart for DFW.


$500 for a student's first study abroad trip.  Total fee is $1,900, minus $1,400 covered by the Neeley Graduate Program office.

  • Included: Textbooks and materials, hotel accommodations (2 students per room), transportation within country, welcome and farewell dinners, expenses related to company visits and lectures.
  • Not included: TCU tuition, airfare to and from South Africa, airport taxes, passports or tourist visas, meals and personal expenses.
  • Guest fee: $1,500
  • Second trip for TCU MBA student: $1,900
  • Registration opens September 15, at 6 a.m.
  • Class is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Full payment of $500 via credit card is required at the time of registration.
