September 12, 2015… Labor Day Weekend marked the beginning of big game hunting in the Jemez Mountains and throughout New Mexico. Generally, bow (archery) season runs through September, muzzleloader (black powder) in October and rifle through November. The Jemez Mountains are divided into three hunt units. 6A (west side), 6B (Valles Caldera) and 6C (east side) generally comprise the Jemez area. While elk and deer will be the most popular quarry during these hunts, hunters will be afield in search of turkey, cougar and bear as well. Specific and detailed hunt information can be found on line at the NMDGF website or from the hard copy hunting proclamation that is available at Amanda’s Country Store.

**** CAMPGROUND ALERT **** All campgrounds within the Santa Fe National Forest, Jemez Ranger District, including Fenton Lake State Park are open and will remain open through approximately October 15th. HOWEVER, THE WATER HAS BEEN TURNED OFF FOR THE WINTER SEASON AT JEMEZ FALLS AND SAN ANTONIO CAMPGROUNDS…EFFECTIVE MONDAY , SEPTEMBER 21, 2015. All forest roads are open for dispersed camping. Be aware that some areas are restricted. Consult the Forest Service Travel Management Map for specific details. This map is available at the Forest Service office.
The new license year began on April 1, 2015 . A new fishing license is required to fish in the State of New Mexico. License fees remain the same. $35 for an adult resident and $11 for a junior (age 12-17) resident. Kids (11 and under) fish free as do adults over the age of 70. There is a senior license for those age 65-69 for $18. All fees above include the required habitat stamps. Licenses are available at Amanda’s Jemez Mountain Country Store or you can purchase your license online at the NMDGF website.
