Champions Named at 2014 National Junior Angus Show
Over 700 Angus juniors and their families traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the 2014 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) July 6-12 at the Indiana State Fair Grounds.
National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members represented “Angus in the Heartland” as they exhibited 1,071 entries during the weeklong event that included more than a dozen educational contests in addition to the cattle show.
Dan Shike, Champaign, Ill. judged the 648 owned heifers; Kevin Rose, Salem, Ill. assisted in judging the owned heifers; Tyler Cates, Modoc, Ind. judged the 254 bred-and-owned heifers, 38 cow-calf pairs, and 65 bred-and-owned bulls; Brian Cates, Modoc, Ind. assisted in judging the bred-and-owned heifers and cow-calf pairs; and Brad Winegardner, Lima, Ohio, judged the 66 steers.
Calli West, Paris, Texas, showed the grand champion owned female, EXAR Frontier Gal 3734. The winning heifer is a January 2013 daughter of Dameron First Class and was first named junior champion – division 7.
Eric Schafer, Owaneco, Ill. led the reserve grand champion owned female. DDA Barbara 1308 is a February 2013 daughter of Dameron First Class and first won junior champion – division 5.
Sydney Schnoor, Chowchilla, Calif. captured grand champion bred-and-owned female honors with Schnoor Winnie 9323. The August 2013 daughter of Dameron First Impression first won intermediate champion.
Blake Boyd, Mayslick, Ky. led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned female, Boyd Abigale 3306. The April 2013 daughter of EXAR Classen 1422B was first named late junior champion.
Jared Radcliffe, Weston, Wis. won grand champion bred-and-owned bull honors with S&R Roundtable J328. The April 2013 son of Plainview Lutton E102 first won junior champion.
Matthew Mitchell, Reinholds, Pa. led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned bull. Cherry Knoll Total Product is an October 2013 son of Connealy Final Product and was first named calf champion.
Logan Wright, Philippi, W.Va. showed the grand champion owned cow-calf pair.
Cherry Knoll Pleasant Elsa is a January 2012 daughter of SAV Brilliance 8077, and first topped the two-year-old division. A March 2014 bull calf sired by Connealy Final Product was at side.
Sydney Schnoor also led the reserve grand champion owned cow-calf pair. EXAR Envious Blackbird 2611 is a January 2012 daughter of Dameron First Class with a February 2014 son of EXAR Durant 6264B at side. The pair first won reserve champion two-year-old pair.
Ryan Callahan, Edmond, Okla. claimed grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with C&C Elina 2015, a January 2012 daughter of Dameron First Class. A January 2014 heifer calf sired by Curtin Fascination 2027 was at side. The duo first won champion two-year-old pair.
Lauren Grimes, Hillsboro, Ohio, captured reserve grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with Maplecrest Rita 2026. The January 2012 daughter of Connealy Confidence 0100 had a February 2014 son of G A R Progress. They first won reserve champion two-year-old pair.
Garrett Gardner, Cherry Tree, Pa. earned grand champion steer honors with Buchanan’s Friday R269. He is the February 2013 son of PVF ALL PAYDAY 729.
Katlyn Tunstill, Fayetteville, Ark. led the reserve grand champion steer. Plum Creek Paradox 3112 is an April 2013 son of Plum Creek Paradox 161B.
Ryan Callahan also claimed bred-and-owned grand champion steer with C&C Right Answer 3063, a March 2013 son of EXAR Right Answer 1546B.
Brody Fitzgerald, West Grove, Pa. earned reserve grand champion bred-and-owned steer with Cherry Knoll Gunner 1338. He is an April 2013 son of Exar Lutton 1831.
