Things You'll Need

Secondary phone line (cell and land line)

Call your phone company and request an additional phone line (about $10 to $20 more per month). Ask for a distinctive ring on that line. This way, when someone calls your business line, you will know by the sound of the ring that it is a potential customer or vendor. This is a cost-effective alternative to starting a separate business line. Call and speak with the small-business sales department of your land-line phone-service provider when you are ready to sign up for a dedicated business line.

Add a line to your current cell phone plan that is dedicated to business only. This will also cost about $10 to $20 per month. You can also start a separate cell phone account for your business, as many cell phone providers offer special service plans

and perks (such as additional phones for employees) for business customers.

Purchase a toll-free number (a line that starts with 800, 888, 866 or 877) to represent your business. Link your regular home or cell-phone number to the toll-free line. You can set the line up so that the 800 number appears on your regular phone's caller ID; that way, you know how to answer the phone. Some of these services cost as little as a few dollars per month per line (see Resources), and the toll-free call is a convenience for your customers.

Sign up for a separate fax number for your business as well. You can do this by adding another additional line to your regular phone service or toll-free account that is dedicated to receiving faxes or by signing up for an online fax service ($10 to $15 per month).
