Step 1

Avoid airport pick up. Most airport rental agencies have additional charges and taxes that apply specifically to the airport locality, such as airport concessions and various government-mandated charges. These charges are not vehicle specific and are not charged at non-airport locations. If you are flying into the airport and need a vehicle, look for locations just outside of the “airport zone."

Step 2

Fill up before you return. The rental agency generally requires you to return the vehicle with the same amount of gas (or more) as when you picked up the vehicle. Avoid the extra charges by filling up the vehicle before you return. Make it the very last stop you make before the return. True. The agencies provide gasoline at their locations, but these prices are not always the most competitive. If you wait until it’s

time to return the vehicle, you may find yourself forced to fill up at a higher price than the local gas station. In addition, failure to fill up will result in a penalty charge.

Step 3

Call your insurance company prior to picking up the rental. Your insurance coverage may insure the rental vehicle. If this is the case, disregard the additional insurance options that are provided by the rental agency. Find out exactly what coverages apply to the rental vehicle and make a responsible decision based on that information.

Watch the mileage. If you rent the vehicle with any option other than “unlimited miles," pay very close attention to the miles you incur. Most rental agencies will charge an additional per cent fee for each additional mile over the contracted amount.

Return the vehicle on time. Returning the vehicle late, even by a few minutes, can result in costly late charges and fees. Read the contract thoroughly and make sure that your return is prompt. Check twice before returning it too early, as well. Some agencies and rental contracts charge additional fees for early returns.
