How to request an amendment
1 Individuals: From 1 July 2015, regardless of how you lodged your tax return, you will be able to request an online amendment. Online amendments are limited to the current year. You can access this service by logging into our online services External Link using your myGov username and password. If you do not have access to a computer and the internet you can still contact us in writing or by completing the form.
2 SMSFs: You must complete the new return in full, not just the parts you want to change. Let us know it is an amendment by checking 'Yes' at question 5. If your amendment is for an income year before the 2011 income year, you must use the paper return form, even if your agent lodged the original return through ELS for you.
3 Registered tax agents: For 2010 and prior years, ELS is available for amendments to individual returns, but not returns for other taxpayers.
There is no fee for requesting an amendment and you don't have to send another tax return unless we ask you to.
If submitting a form or letter you should keep a copy of your request for your records. If using our
online services you will be able to access your details at any time.
How to request an online amendment
Submitting an online amendment is the fastest way for us to process your request - generally it takes about 20 days. All you need is a myGov account linked to the ATO to access our online services.
To correct an existing amount, simply select the relevant field and over-write the amount with the correct amount. If you need to add or delete a record, you can do that too by selecting the relevant button.
When you have corrected the information, select the 'Calculate' button and we'll work out your new amount of refund or how much you owe. There's no need to provide any supporting documents to us. Online amendments are only available for the current year.

The acceptable signature on an amendment request varies depending on whether the request is submitted online or on paper:
- online – an electronic signature is required
- on paper – depends on who is lodging the request (see table).
