How to get a tax file number
Before starting work we recommend you get a tax file number (TFN). We issue TFNs to individuals, businesses and other organisations for identification and record-keeping purposes.
We have a special form, Tax file number – application or enquiry for Aboriginals or Torres Strait Islanders. which makes getting your TFN easier. Your application must include unedited documents proving your identity. The TFN application lists documents that we accept.
If you don't have enough proof-of-identity documents for your application, you can nominate an authorised referee, such as a council chairperson, community manager, school principal, minister of religion, doctor, senior nursing sister or an authorised government officer (such as a Community Development Employment Project Officer).
If you apply for a TFN in person at an ATO shopfront or by mail, it will take up to 28 days to process your application and send your TFN to the address you nominate.
To get a Tax file number – application or enquiry for Aboriginals or Torres Strait Islanders form (NAT 1589):

your TFN with anyone
Your TFN is a way we identify you. It is yours for life, so keep it secure. It's important you don't share your TFN with anyone else.
Don't allow anyone else to use your TFN – even friends or relatives. Letting someone else use your TFN, selling it or giving it away can cause serious problems for you. Keeping your TFN and other identity details secure means other people won't be able to use your TFN to commit crimes in your name.
Only give your TFN to people with a legitimate reason for having it, such as your:
- registered tax agent
- bank, or
- employer after you begin work (but do not provide it on job applications).
Report the loss, theft or misuse of your TFN to us without delay by calling the ATO Indigenous Helpline on 13 10 30 .
