How to shop tax free in the United Kingdom (for non-EU residents)
Ask in the store for a tax free form, fill it in, ensure the store signs it and attach the original purchase receipt to it. Then choose how to get your refund. The final refund will consist of the VAT total, minus an administration fee.
Get cash at a City Refund Point
Present your tax form together with the original purchase receipt at a City Refund Point in the United Kingdom and get your refund in cash (cash fee may apply). As guarantee, use a Visa or MasterCard, valid for at least 3 months. This refund possibility is available only if the total purchase amount on your tax free form is over 50 GBP and not higher than 1,000 GBP.
When leaving the EU, get your tax free form export-validated, then post it, together with the original purchase receipt, to Tax Free Worldwide.
If the export-validated tax free form and the original purchase receipt are not returned to Tax Free Worldwide within 25 days from the date of refund, the full VAT amount will be debited from your credit card.
Get cash at an International Refund Point When leaving the EU, get your tax free form export-validated, then present it, together with the original purchase receipt, at one of the International Refund Points and get your refund in cash (cash fee may apply).
This refund possibility is available only if the total purchase amount on your tax free form is over 50 GBP.
For refund amounts over 1,000 GBP at Gatwick and Heathrow airports, Tax Free Worldwide should be prior warned to ensure enough cash is available at the refund point.
refund onto your credit card When leaving the EU get your tax free form export-validated, make sure you have written the number of a valid credit card on it, then post it, together with the original purchase receipt, to Tax Free Worldwide.
Your refund will be credited to your credit card.
Get the export validation Tax free forms must be filled in and always export validated within 3 months after the month of purchase (or within 25 days from the day of refund if you got your refund at a City Refund Point).
Get the export validation at Customs if you are leaving the EU from a place that is not Heathrow airport. Customs is well signposted at all airports, land borders or ports. Have your passport, purchased items and flight ticket with you for inspection.
If you are leaving the EU from Heathrow airport, present your tax free form and the original receipt to a Travelex VAT refund desk (have your passport, purchased items and flight ticket with you for inspection). Travelex will arrange to have your tax free form export validated by Customs. At Heathrow Airport goods with a single item value over 249 GBP must be presented to Customs in order to receive export validation.
Are you leaving from UK airports, but you will change flights in transit at another EU airport and the goods you are exporting are checked through to a destination outside the EU? Then go to customs at the UK airport (or to the Travelex VAT refunds desk at the Heathrow airport) and your tax free form will be export validated as if you were at the EU departure point.Source: www.taxfreeworldwide.com
