Tips on how to be a good dancer
I think what would benefit you the most is taking a "Private Lesson". Talk to your instructor and ask to schedule one of these. This is where you get a one-on-one hour lesson, where you can work on your technique. It's really the best way to get the attention you would like to help you get over the hump.
Don't get discouraged. It sounds like your confidence level is also a problem. This will keep you from progressing. Remember that the only think you need to do on the dance floor is have a good time. Even if you mess up, if you are smiling and enjoying the music, then there's nothing to apologize for.
Aside from a private lesson, I'd recommend practicing your footwork every day. This will help you learn "muscle memory" where you will start being able to do the footwork without thinking about it. Play a few swing songs you like, and just
do the basic footwork through the whole song. Do this every day for two weeks and I guarantee you will feel a difference in your dancing.
Next, you'll need to practice your "frame". All this means is that when the lead moves your hands in any direction, you're body goes with it, without hesitation. This is something you can get tips on during a private lesson. One technique I have used when teaching is to have the follow hold a towel under each of their elbows and against their body. The goal of this exercise is to not let the towel drop as the lead moves you forward, backward, sideways, and doing free spins. You might want to try this after you have worked on your footwork. Footwork is the most important thing to focus on first, because that's the foundation of the dance.
