The IRS have done a good job at making information regarding your refund, when it’ll be with you, how to check on it and what do to do if it doesn’t arrive.
If you head over to IRS.gov on the right hand side of the home page you will see a button on the right hand side under filing and payment that says Where’s My Refund?
Click on that button and you can see this Youtube video explaining in detail where it may be.
They say that after you file your return online your refund will be ready to be checked on within 24 hours and within 4 weeks if you files a paper return. You only need to check one time per day using their “where’s my refund” system.

What information is Available on Where’s My Refund?
Refund information for the most current tax year that you filed will generally be available 72 hours after we acknowledge receipt of your e-filed return, or three to four weeks after you mail your paper return.
What information is Not Available on Where’s My Refund?
- Amended Tax Return (Form 1040X) Information
Where’s My Refund? does not track refunds that are claimed on amended tax returns.
Amended/corrected returns may take 8 to 12 weeks, or longer, to process.
If it’s been more than 8 weeks since you filed your amended return and you haven’t received your refund, please contact a customer service representative by calling 800-829-1040. From outside the U.S. call 267-941-1000. TTY/TDD:

- Prior Year Refund Information Information on Where’s My Refund? will be for the latest tax year that we have on file for you.
